We all carry an invisible pen. With it, we try to write the perfect version of our lives: setting goals, building timelines, and shaping outcomes to fit what we think is best. We often carry this pressure as if living a meaningful life depends solely on us. And while planning has its place, we often forget something essential: we weren’t made to be the author.
Scripture reminds us of our true identity: “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand…” (Ephesians 2:10). Before we took our first breath, God already knew our name and had written a story filled with purpose. He didn’t create us and leave us to figure it all out. His invitation is forever life-changing: drop your pen and live the purpose written for you by the true Author.
To “drop the pen” doesn’t mean giving up. It means surrendering the illusion that we’re in control of the whole story. It’s not passivity, it’s availability. When we place our story in God’s hands, we open ourselves to being led, refined, and redirected by the One who sees the whole picture and writes with perfect grace.
Still, surrender isn’t easy. Trusting God often means stepping into the unknown. We fear what we can’t see, and letting go of the pen can feel like walking in the dark. But walking in God’s purpose doesn’t promise a pain-free life; it promises a meaningful one. His story includes valleys, yes, but they’re never wasted.
God is not a distant observer; He is the Author and Perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). His story for us may not always match our expectations, but it always carries eternal value.
And here’s something important to remember:
The phrase “drop your pen” doesn’t mean we’re passive characters with no agency. It simply calls us to stop writing our own self-centered story and instead align our lives with the will and purpose of God, the true Author.
You can still move, speak, and grow, but your story needs to flow from trust instead of striving. You’re no longer forcing the plot, you’re following the One who writes in truth and grace.
So today, take a breath. Loosen your grip. Drop the pen, not in fear, but in freedom. Let the Author write something better than what you had planned. And in that surrender, you’ll find peace, purpose, and the joy of walking with the One who never makes mistakes.
